News

This past year has been very eventful for Better Living Communities and Salisbury Park. Phase II of Salisbury park was completed on schedule and all 22 units were occupied by late fall. The development celebrated National Night Out once again in August of 2007, with over 200 participants from the community, Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Salisbury Park. Children enjoyed face painting, water play, a bounce house. Adults were able to receive information from area service organizations like Grace Hill Americore, Grace Hill Clean Air Program, St. Louis City Health Services, and the National Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse. All enjoyed free food and snow cones provided by donations from Better Living Communities, Community Asset Management Company, St. Louis Equity Fund, Absopure Water, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and Corner Stone Café.

On October 14, 2007 Better Living Communities, the residents or Salisbury Park I as well as long standing residents of Hyde Park celebrated the Grand Opening of Salisbury Park Phase II. The event was a great day of celebration and fulfillment with nearly 500 in attendance. The event was not just momentous for Better Living Communities, but for the city of St. Louis and the state of Missouri as well as the event was attended by many local and state wide political officials. We would like to thank Senator Kit Bond’s office, State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, & Alderman Freeman Bosley Sr. for their attendance at the celebration. The event included entertainment from the Lutheran North High School band, and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church choir as well as a color guard presentation from Boy Scout Troupe 26. All in attendance were treated to food prepared by Corner Stone Café and a catering service owned by Tony & Tracy Williams, residents of Salisbury Park I.

2008 presents Better Living Communities and Salisbury Park I & II with a new year of opportunity and community growth. We are hoping to plan community events that will allow the long standing residents of Hyde Park to interact with the residents of Salisbury Park and the potential residents of the Irving School Project. These events will be designed to assist us in reaching our ultimate goal of reestablishing the Hyde Park community and to create a community in which everyone can be vested and proud of.

With all of the wonderful things that are happening with Better Living Communities and Salisbury Park I & II the tragedy of our missing resident Kelly Allen is still with us. Kelly was reported missing on Tuesday, March 13th 2007 and we are quickly approaching the 1 year anniversary of her disappearance. Her family is still desperately seeking information that may result in safe return. If you have any information concerning her whereabouts please contact her family at (314-621-2557) or the St. Louis City Police Department.

Our Mission

'Better Living Communities' aims at helping people in urban, economically depressed areas through:

  1. Developing more affordable housing in the North St. Louis community.
  2. Equipping, supporting and assisting people to keep their homes in good and safe working order, and increase the quality of life in the community.
  3. Serving as a catalyst for other community development to better the quality of life in the neighborhoods of North St. Louis.

Our History

Before the year 2000, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of North St. Louis, began making repairs.

Over the span of 20 months, Bethlehem received four donated properties that were all located within a two-block radius.

Led by Mr. Benjamin Berry, rehabilitation of the first of these 4 properties was completed in November 1999. Sister churches like Faith Lutheran Church (Oakville, MO), Lord of Life Lutheran Church (Chesterfield, MO), Lutheran Church of the Resurrection (Sunset Hills, MO) and Webster Gardens Lutheran Church (Webster Groves) brought many volunteer workers to assist Bethlehem in the renovation of three additional properties.

Salisbury Park, a new nine block living community, is the current project of Better Living Communities.
